I am 16 years old, I have been in love with the sport of bull riding for a really long time. I want to be a bull rider but there are people standing in my way. More specifically my mother. How did your parents react to your choice of becoming a bull rider or a bronc rider? Any tips for me? I have about a year left before I graduate, and after I graduate I am heading to Sankey's ;D I cant wait! ps: this is my first post, I am unfamiliar with discussion forums so I hope this is working correctly lol

As the parent of a female bullrider, I am special. I never got upset or mad. That was my daughters choice and I let her make it. I took a lot of gruff, but when people started seeing how good she was, I didn't get as much. My daughter never went to the Sankey school, she went to Terry Don Wests. She was his first female rider, but was very determined and did exceptionally well. If you want to learn to bull ride and have a horse, practice lots. Ride bareback and jump. Work on your form. Keep sitting up and keep your free arm up. Good luck and don't let anyone discourage you. Thanks.

Thank you very much, I wish my mother was as understanding. I have looked up Terry Don West, I would love to go there but its to far away for me at this time. Rodeomom that is so awesome that your daughter was the first girl there! I have a horse, can riding horses really help you in bull riding? When riding, other then riding bareback and doing jumping, is there anything else that can prepare me? I have also been looking up exercises to help build my upper body strength. Thanks again! I really appreciate it!

my mom is right. I did alot of bareback riding. I prefer to ride bareback. Jumping is a very good thing to do but jump bareback not with a saddle. You get the up and down motion you will get on a bull it wont be as much or as powerful but you will still get your seat. Terry Don West was a ways when i went but it was a really good school and i learned alot. Im hoping to get back down to him in the spring.

another thing. people will try and get to you dont let them get in your way. You gotta gain their trust especially the guys. They are really helpful once you gain it and even when your starting out but some can be mean and tell you they dont believe women should be riding. I had to gain their trust and once i did i became family to them. My best friend i met bull riding and i miss him to death being about 30 hours from him but he is my big brother and he has been by my side through everything. Not to many of the guys i can say have been like he has. he knows everything about me and he stands by my decisions. If i want to ride he is not going to stop me if i dont feel up to riding he says its up to you sis. Just dont let them get to you or they will realize if they keep it up you might leave.

forgot another thing that works is if you have a bull rope or even take a lead rope and wrap it around the girth of your horse. Have someone lunge you in a circle while holding on to just that set your free arm and take the wrap it helps alot with balance.

I understand about the parents. My mom and stepdad told me that if I got on a bull that'd I'd have to find another place to live. After years of begging them to change their minds I finally realized that I wasn't getting any younger and when i had the oppertunity to move out I did. I found a practice pen out where I'm at and for the first year all the guys pretty much ignored me. Then the next year the bull fighter came around and started giving me tips. I found out too that going to other places besides the practice pen gave me confidence. i was stuck in a rut last year til I went to a rodeo and got on a bull bigger than what I had rode in the practice pen. I plan on going back this year and adding more rodeos. So keep your chin up, practice with your form and stuff on your horse and you should do just fine.
